Various initiatives, projects, NGOs, academics and scientific institutions will gather during this week to discuss some hot topics in Mediterranean conservation, including bycatch of marine vulnerable species, conserving biodiversity on Mediterranean islands and the linkages between tourism and climate change.
International bycatch meeting - 4-6 October This event will demonstrate the current state-of-the-art in addressing bycatch worldwide, with particular emphasis on the needs and challenges associated with the implementation of bycatch programmes in different seas and fisheries. This meeting is open to technical experts and researchers from all over the world working on bycatch mitigation and monitoring. This event will be live-streamed on the facebook page of IUCN-Med:
Protecting Nature on Mediterranean islands - 27 September This event will present the first strategy and action plan for Mediterranean islands. Different examples of key biodiversity conservation actions in Mediterranean islands will be discussed, while exploring priorities and challenges related to taking action for non-native invasive species, protecting endemic fauna and flora and restoring ecosystems and linking biodiversity to islands economy and social priorities. Tourism and climate change in the Costa del Sol region - 28 September The findings of the report on “Tourism and climate crisis on the Costa del Sol: preliminary diagnosis and proposals for action” will be presented during the conference "Tourism and climate change on the Costa del Sol" The report has been collaboratively prepared by a consortium specifically created to work on the study, aiming to explore the linkages between tourism and climate change. The initiative, born from IUCN Center for Mediterranean Cooperation and the University of Malaga, has benefited from the collaboration of the Institute of Tourism Intelligence and Innovation of the University of Malaga, the FyM Chair of Climate Change of the University of Malaga, the company Social Climate and the tourism company Explora Málaga., with the financial support of the MAVA Foundation.
