A delegation led by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy of Algeria visited the IUCN-Med offices as a part of a visit to the region of Andalusia in Spain.

The IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Center and the Algerian Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy signed a framework Cooperation memorandum in Málaga to promote the design and joint implementation of projects and initiatives in the field of nature conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Algeria.

The memorandum was signed by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy of Algeria, Mr. Kamel Eddine Belatreche, and the Director of IUCN-Med, Mr. Antonio Troya, and has a duration of four years.

“This meeting is promising in terms of collaboration. Our first deadline will be the IUCN World Congress in Marseille next June, to promote the Green List of Protected Areas in Algeria and identify the first actions towards Nature-based Solutions. These actions are intended to contribute and respond to the national climate plan with the aim of submitting them for funding to the Green Climate Fund, ”explains Mr. Kamel Eddine Belatreche, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy of Algeria.

The main objective of the memorandum is to work jointly to strengthen and develop the national network of protected areas and more particularly that of marine protected areas. Emphasis will be placed on ecotourism in protected areas, preservation of animal species and threatened plants, and Nature-based Solutions to promote the role of ecosystems to mitigate climate change.

The two parties also wish to support Algerian civil society organizations for the development and implementation of activities in the field of biodiversity conservation and valuation through the PPI-OSCAN initiative and other programmes .

The signing of the agreement was part of the Algerian delegation's official visit to Spain. Algerian ministerial representatives met with the regional authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Andalusian regional government, and were received by the Director of the United Nations International Training Center for authorities and leaders (UNITAR) in Malaga.

The official trip ended with a meeting with the IUCN-Med team at its headquarters in Malaga, and made it possible to pre-identify priority actions to start the implementation of the framework agreement.
