New collaboration agreements

Conservation of the Mediterranean requires a common approach from several sectors of the society. IUCN-Med, in order to achieve a better collaboration, has signed a several agreements with many important entities. These agreements refer to a wide variety of topics, such as the promotion of sustainable rural development, the ecological protection of the island of Formentera, as well as fishing or submarine orography, for example.


Promotion of a sustainable rural development


The Ministry of Environment, and Rural and Marine Affaires, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature signed a collaboration agreement, whose main objectives are: improve rural development and biodiversity conservation, rural economy´s diversification and sustainable rural development training or the organization of events about sustainable rural development.


Sustainable development of fishing activity
The International Union for Conservation of Nature signed a memorandum of understanding with the Spanish Government. This agreement will aid the development of common projects about sustainable fisheries including fighting illegal fishing, research and promotion of sustainable aquiculture, as well as the improvement of governance of seas and oceans.


Agreement with UNESCO and Malaga University Foundation
The Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature(UICN-MED) an the UNESCO chair for Communication of Malaga´s University signed a collaboration agreement, which includes a group of necessary actions to establish different strategies of communication, in order to promote the traffic of environmental information in the media of the Mediterranean basin. There is also planned the creation of a specialized communication agency, with its base in Malaga, whose name will be Mediaterranean.

Submarine Canyons and Mountains
The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA), the French Agency of Marine Protected Areas and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) signed a collaboration agreement that will focus on a survey for cetacean (dolphins, whales and porpoises) population and distribution, also considering turtles and seabirds, also top predators of the ecosystem. On the other hand, this initiative will focus on submarine deep sea habitat prospecting campaigns, in particular submarine canyons and mounts.
